Multifocal Vs. Monofocal

MULTIFOCAL IOL Vs. MONOFOCAL IOL:

Multifocal lenses tend to be the more popular choice among vision correction patients. A patient's lifestyle says a lot about what kind of intraocular lens implant they are going to choose. Active people will naturally benefit more from a lens that allows them to see without having to put on a pair of glasses, while someone less active may not mind using a pair of reading glasses every once in a while when they need to read something.

Monofocal lenses focus on one zone, meaning if you are going to have a monofocal lens put into place you are most likely going to have it correct distance vision. Once the distance vision has been corrected you will only need reading glasses to for your near vision, so you'll need to put on your glasses to read a book or the menu when you go out. While multifocal lenses help correct both near and distant vision at the same time. Meaning that there is a strong possibility following surgery that you will not have to put on a pair of glasses to read most of the smaller prints on a daily basis.

Multifocal lenses do have some minor side effects that alter your vision in certain conditions. In low lighting situations you may experience glare, or you may find yourself seeing halos around lights. The side effects are often mild and over time your brain begins to adapt to them. Multifocal lenses usually need to be implanted into both eyes in order to have full adaptation. Dr. John and staff will discuss the pros and cons with you regarding the type of intraocular lens implant.
